You don’t have to be severely obese for excess weight to threaten your health and happiness. For these patients who don’t quite fit the definition of severe obesity, new options are quickly becoming available. The Endoscopic POSE (Primary Obesity Surgery Endolumenal) procedure, a promising new surgery currently finishing up a trial period with outstanding results, seems to be a viable weight loss option for patients who have been struggling with their weight, but who may not meet the criteria for standard weight loss surgery.
It is also a good option for people who prefer a conservative approach, because the POSE procedure involves no external incisions. Instead, an endoscope is inserted through the mouth of the anesthetized patient. Using the tiny light and camera, the surgeon then reduces the available area of the stomach so that it can hold less food. As with more radical weight loss surgeries, the result is a significant reduction in appetite, making weight loss a great deal easier.
While at this moment it is not widely available, we are working daily to bring this procedure to our patients. This and some other innovative approaches to less invasive or non-invasive weight management are on the horizon and will be made available soon. We at Elite Surgical Center are staying abreast of the developments in these areas and look forward to being among the first to offer these options.
