Nationwide, 80 to 90 percent of all bariatric patients have the procedure covered by their medical insurance company. It is important to first check with your insurance provider to determine if you are eligible for coverage.
Typically, insurance companies will cover the surgical costs of patients who have a BMI over 40, or have a BMI over 35 in conjunction with several dangerous co-morbidities including heart disease and diabetes. Most insurance companies will also require a psychological evaluation to insurance that the patient is willing and able to adapt to a new relationship with food.
For those who are denied coverage or simply do not have medical insurance, payment plans are available.
